Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary: Witnessing Wildlife Wonders Near Hampi Guide

Escape the ancient ruins of Hampi for a while and venture into the wild at the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary! This unique sanctuary, located just a short distance from Hampi, offers a rare opportunity to observe sloth bears in their natural habitat. It's a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking a different perspective on the Hampi region. Prepare to be amazed by these fascinating creatures and the diverse ecosystem they call home. Established in 1994, the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary was created to protect the dwindling sloth bear population in the area. The landscape is characterized by rocky hills, scrub forests, and thorny bushes, providing ideal shelter and foraging grounds for the bears. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in conserving this vulnerable species and promoting awareness about their importance in the ecosystem. The sanctuary also supports other wildlife, including leopards, hyenas, jackals, and various bird species. The primary activity at the sanctuary is, of course, bear watching! Designated viewing points have been set up where you can observe the bears as they emerge from their dens in search of food, especially during the late afternoon. The sanctuary staff often provide water and food (usually a sweet porridge) to attract the bears, increasing your chances of a sighting. Remember to bring binoculars for a closer look and maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing the animals. Photography is allowed, but flash photography is prohibited. While there aren't specific culinary traditions associated with the sanctuary itself, you can find delicious South Indian cuisine in nearby Hampi and Hospet.
